New York celebrates its 500th legal cannabis store, with sales reaching $1.4 billion.
More than 500 adult cannabis stores have opened in New York State, a milestone regulators celebrated Friday, marking record cannabis sales so far this year. The New York State Office of Cannabis Management said Green Comfort in Rochester, upstate New York, is the 500th store to open, and also reported $1.4 billion in sales so far in 2025. Total sales in New York since opening in December 2022 have exceeded $2.44 billion, according to a report filed Thursday with the New York State Cannabis Control Board. Earlier this year, regulators projected annual sales of $1.5 billion for 2025. August sales surpassed a record $215 million, according to Patrick McKeage, chief operating officer of OCM. He said September and October sales were $134 million and $136 million, respectively, but these figures could be revised upwards as more licensors submit data. According to OCM data, of the 526 cannabis stores in New York City, 56% of the adult use licenses were issued to social equity applicants.
